The World Economic Forum announced a new initiative: One Trillion Trees . The goal of the initiative is to “connect, empower and mobilize a global reforestation community of millions, unleashing their potential to act at an unprecedented scale and speed, to ensure the conservation and restoration of one trillion trees within this decade“.

Although a commendable initiative, many climate change activists argue – for good reason – that planting trees alone will not make a huge impact in fighting climate change. More immediate and radical actions need to be taken, like:

  • Restricting the use of and investment in fossil fuels and other pollutants;
  • Aggressive federal legislation;
  • Imposing a carbon tax;
  • Engaging people who have innate knowledge (like indigenous people around the world) and turning their knowledge in simple tools and technologies;
  • Creating simple solutions like the bubble barrier that traps plastic flowing on rivers built by Dutch entrepreneurs.

All it takes to make significant change is creativity and willingness to take action. What creative idea did you come up with today?
