The biggest challenge I had with it was implementing it in the real world. The world that tells you that you have to comply, you have to follow certain rules and cannot ever deviate from them if you want to be accepted into society or if you want to continue to be part of it. But I guess revolutionaries don't go by the rules. Societies progress not because revolutionaries follow the rules but because they break them and by doing that, they change the status quo to the new, new thing the entire world has been waiting for but never knew what exactly that was. If we all would take this advice to heart, the world would be a much, much better place
They want meaning and they want the company they work for to have a purpose that is more than "maximizing shareholder value". They want the company to have an impact on the environment and not just a have a "sustainability statement". They want to create products for people who are not as fortunate as they are. They want to solve some of the worlds biggest problems. They want to impact the world in a significant way and leave it a little better than they found it.

Yes, boomers and Gen X'ers would argue that they have the same aspirations as the Millenials. But most of them will not quit a good job or career if they company they work for doesn't do more than "increasing value to shareholders". Boomers and Gen X'ers will stay. They will justify to themselves and others that the company is doing other good things - like creating good products.

Well, it turns out that Millenials want a lot more than to "create a good product". And when they are asked why, they answer "Why not?"

<dc:subject>Leadership</dc:subject>

Productivity and Bad Bosses

Inc. magazine publised a very interesting article and even more fun infogram about the impact bad bosses have on their employees.

How do you rate yourself as a boss?

Steve Jobs - Master Communicator

I've been looking for examples of great communicators and I keep arriving at the same conclusion: Steve Jobs was the best communicator. Here is a great example of how simple words, short sentences, and a logical flow have much more impact than very long sentences, industry lingo, and thought-within-a-thought flow. Yes, I am talking about the famous interview of Wall Street Journal with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Watch carefully how Steve and Bill answer the same question. You can test the effectiveness of Steve's style by seeing how much you remember of what Bill said vs. what Steve said.
Most authors were talking about the new organizational models: flat, focused on building something for the greater good and not on world domination, promoting sustainability, educating people on global issues, involving people from around the world and not being afraid to crowd-source or use open source tools. Money, the authors said, will show up if you follow your passion and these new "rules". And, these rules, they argued, are not only for start-ups or small companies. Large, established organizations are doing it, too. It's just a matter of different mind set, they preached.

I got inspired and excited about this new way of thinking is finally becoming mainstream. All that it requires is the willingness to accept that the world has changed and is continuously changing. That the Internet allows us to learn about the various significant issues people have around the world. They inspire us to create innovative solutions to all these problems and leave this world better than we found it.

What's in your bag?

Many years ago, when I started traveling a lot, I switched from a briefcase and a hand bag to a large, catch-all bag. They had to fit my laptop (not always small), a smart phone, power cords for both plus the necessary plug adapters, passport, wallet, one or two notebooks, the book was reading at the time, colored pens, a camera, business cards holder, a small bag with other "stuff" (extra contacts, lipstick, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, etc.), and an extra T-shirt (it comes in handy after 14-18-hour flights). I ended up with a Mulberry messenger bag (don't ask how much it costs; that was my insanity moment), a leather backpack, and a Juicy Couture bag (think early 2000's). They all traveled around the globe and logged an incredible number of miles.

Most recently, I bought my first Timbuk2 messenger bag at one of my favorite stores, Title Nine. Timbuk2 made a special version for Title Nine, the "One in a Million Bag".

Poking around Timbuk2's site, I came across a fun site called "What's in your bag?". People take pictures of their Timbuk2 bags and their contents and post them on this site. Here are couple of things I found in common with fellow Timbuk2 fans:

- We all carry at least one Moleskin notebook.
- Most of us carry a bunch of pens and pencils.
- We all have love music and have a headset and some type music player (iPhone or iPod) in our bags.
- We all carry at least one smart phone.
- A vast majority of us are Apple/Mac users: laptops and/or iPhones and/or iPads.
- Most of us carry an extra camera with us and a large number of us have digital SLR's in our bags.
- Most of us have a book stashed in there.

What's in your bag?

<dc:subject>Lifestyle</dc:subject>

Banality of Heroism

According to Dr. Phillip Zimbardo and Zeno Franco, heroes do 5 things:

1. Maintain constant vigilance for situations that require heroic actions.
2. Learn not to fear conflict because they took a stand.
3. Imagine alternative future scenarios beyond the present moment.
4. Resist the urge to rationalize and justify inaction.
5. Trust that people will appreciate heroic (and frequently unpopular actions).

How do you translate this in your life?

Small businesses turn to alternative lenders

The recession created many problems. Some got fixed and some didn't. One major remaining issue is bank lending to small businesses. Most banks are now asking for a lot collateral and only lend money to companies that don't really need it. Some small business owner chose to limit their growth, others found some non-traditional lending alternatives. Here is a good article from USA Today on various options of alternative lenders.
<dc:subject>Small Business</dc:subject>

12 lessons Steve Jobs taught Guy Kawasaki
