Facebook, Google, Yahoo Fighting "Do Not Track" Legislation

California is proposing "Do no track" legislation, which Google, Facebook, and Yahoo among others are fighting. The counter argument they give for tracking people's movements, spending habits, and location
"The measure would negatively affect consumers who have come to expect rich content and free services through the Internet".
The real argument is the $30 billion and counting of the online ads market. Google and Facebook own the majority of that market. A mandatory "opt out" function will result on drops in revenues from ads. And Google and Facebook's value consists in providing detailed consumer data to advertisers. Limited or no data will result in significant losses. The "free, rich content" is not free after all....
