How Much Power Does the Internet Use

Your data is not green and it's not efficient. It turns out that the "Internet" uses enormous amounts of power. According to Boing Boing:
"Data centers’ energy consumption is currently growing at a rate of 12% per year as the need for more data storage increases. If the Internet was rated as a country, it’s total energy consumption would be 5th in the world, just after Japan and above Russia".
And, it's not even green. Most data centers still use dirty power: coal and nuclear. Here is an infographic of this data (from psfk) that breaks down all of the major sites' usage.
