Facebook to mine real-time conversations for add targeting

Facebook will test the mining of real-time conversation for add targeting. The company has performed add targeting on status updates, but never on a real-time basis. Until now, Facebook said that this type of algorithm is very hard to develop. The test is performed on 1% of users, which still makes it a huge number of people. It works like this: a user will update his status to "My mocha at Starbucks came out cold" and would instantly get a coupon from Stumptown Coffee.

Industry experts say this will be the future of advertising: real-time conversation "following". As the saying goes, "Be careful what you wish for, 'cause you might just get - a coupon for it on Facebook"....
