8 Tips on How to Better Target Your Customer

I was talking the other day with couple of people involved in social media marketing for their respective companies - one very small, and the other very large. Both complained about the same issue: social media is becoming flooded by enormous amounts of money from the recently awaken giants like Pepsi, Coca Cola, or P&G. These giants have figured out - finally - that having a huge following on Facebook translates in more sales than traditional TV ads that get skipped or TiVoed. The and result is increase CPC on Facebook ads that make it almost prohibiting to small companies and very expensive for bigger companies.

Shortly after our discussion I came across this article from Advertising Age. The authors suggested targeting customers who:

  1. Are less price sensitive;
  2. Struggle with big problems;
  3. Are interested in new products and services from your brand;
  4. Will advocate your brand;
  5. Are socially connected on the web and are willing to promote your brand (goes hand in hand with number 4);
  6. Have distinct wants and needs;
  7. Use both traditional and social media avenues pre and post purchase;
  8. Are findable in syndicated media databases.
