Is Google Building a Facebook Rival? Mashable Thinks So

Writing for CNN.com, Pete Cashmore of Mashable commented on the rumors of Google building a rival to Facebook. While the giant search engine is doing great in that space, it lack any significant success in the social media space. Their attempt to create a rival for Twitter fell flat on its face. So did Google's Friend Connect, a rival for Facebook's Connect.
Given the fact that there is no real alternative to Facebook and their recent privacy issues, Cashmore welcomes the potential competition. I can only wonder what it will do to the data collection. Both companies have spotty records on the privacy issues and both are obsessed with collecting as much information about users as they legally can. Their respective quest for world domination might, in turn, hurt us, their users.
What do you think?
