Android - iPad Rival?

Acer CEO announced that they will use the Android platform for Acer's new tablet PC. Dell, HP, Toshiba made similar announcements.

Reading between the lines:
  • Everybody is trying to catchup to Apple. The tablet PC had a rocky life so far, no PC manufacturer has produced a well-designed, attractive table. Until iPad came into life. Granted, the touch screen technology offered a lot more design flexibility.
  • The "other" manufacturers are stunned by the iPad's success. In an economy not fully recovered, people still lined up for hours to pay $400 to $600 for a device that is not even their main computer. Now, everybody is racing to get into the game.
  • Microsoft missed the boat - entirely. Official excuse: they have bigger plans. "Touch is a hot commodity across all form factors. Slates are just a small piece of that."
  • In an ever effort for world domination, Google offers the Android OS for free. As one of the manufacturers said: "It's hard to beat that price".
  • The Android OS might be free, but it comes with extra bonus: bugs. That in top of full conversion from a cell phone platform to a tablet one. Some manufactures fixed and modified the system on their own; others are waiting for Google to finish the tablet version before they use it.
We will see how all this will shake up. But, most of us know how the answer: Apple will win and the "me-too"s will get their 15 seconds of fame. What makes Apple Apple is its incredible creativity, original design, and first and foremost their incredible ability to invent the future.
