US Ready to Join Climate-Aid Fund

Secretary Clinton announced today that the US is ready to contribute $100 billion per year for the next decade towards helping developing countries fight climate change. The announcement was made in the last hour of negotiations at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The US aid does not guarantee a resolution of the Conference. Developing countries led by China are asking for a continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which forces developed countries to reduce emissions, but does not require developing countries to follow the same strict standards.

During the Copenhagen Conference, developing countries have been very vocal about the responsibility of developed countries to provide funding and technology to reduce emissions. Furthermore, China is lobbying self-monitoring of carbon emissions, claiming that an international monitoring system is not necessary.
