Social Advertising Best Practices

IAB (The Interactive Advertising Bureau, an organization comprised of more than 375 advertising and technology companies) held its conference in New York recently. The takeaway:
  • Social advertising is the way of the future for advertising.
  • Brands need to embrace 2-way communication with their customers, and not avoid it as they've done in the past.
  • Josh Bernoff's 4-step process to make social advertising work:
  1. People: assess your customer's social activities;
  2. Objective: decide what you want to accomplish (don't focus initially on the technology);
  3. Strategy: plan for how relationships with customers will change;
  4. Technology: decide which social technologies to use.
  • People don't talk about brands, but about their problems - LISTEN and incorporate solutions to their problems in your product.
